When you use 802.2 APPC router connections to the iSeries, you need to set the Switched Diconnect value in the APPC controller description to *NO so that the router doesn't disconnect when idling:

  1. Find the APPC controller:

    WRKCFGSTS CFGTYPE(*CTL) CFGD(*ALL)

  2. Next to the APPC controller, type 2 and Enter to vary off the controller.
  3. Type 8 and Enter to work with the object description.
  4. From the Work with Controller Description screen, type 2 and Enter to change the controller description.
  5. Set Switched Disconnect to *NO.
  6. Return to the Work with Configuration Status screen:

    WRKCFGSTS CFGTYPE(*CTL) CFGD(*ALL)

  7. Next to the APPC controller, type 1 and Enter to vary on the controller.

The APPC controller no longer disconnects when the router is idle.
