This article is from the AS/400 internet newsgroup and is related to handling the Euro symbol when creating, printing or converting AFP reports to TIFF or PDF.
Note that this is a coverletter for V4R4, and the function is in the base for V4R5:
The attached PTF cover letter gives some good information on HPT euro support
for spooled files which print in "mapping" mode (*SCS, *AFPDS w/o host-resident
fonts). One point that it infers, but does not emphasis, is that HPT must
believe that the spooled file print data is encoded in a codepage that has the
EURO symbol (usually 1140-1160). This is accomplished by either:
a) specifying it in the CHRID parameter of the spooled filed (i.e.; the value
'695 1140' is chrid 500 + euro)
b) If above is *DEVD, specify the CHRID value in the Device Description,
or....
c) If above is *SYSVAL, specify the desired CHRID in the QCHRID system value.
Refer to http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/euro/roadmap.htm for a
table of euro code pages and other info.
From the PTF coverletter, I deduce that the *HP4 customizing object will
indicate to HPT the the printer does NOT have the euro symbol in its resident
symbol sets. As such, HPT will download the symbol to the printer each time
it attempts to print it. Again, HPT needs to be aware that the data contains
this symbol, so the CHRID must be assigned appropriately.

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM FIXED FOR APAR SA77870 :
-----------------------------------------------
OS/400 Host Print Transform Workstation Customization Object
changes to provide support for the euro currency, the new common
currency for the European Union.
CORRECTION FOR APAR SA77870 :
-----------------------------
OS/400 Host Print Transform (HPT) Workstation Customization
Objects have been changed to support the euro currency. Some
changes support the datastream selection of code pages
containing the euro currency symbol resident in the printer.
Others provide a tag to direct HPT to download the euro
currency symbol when one is not resident in the printer.
This change is not a complete solution for the support of the
euro currency, it is an enabler for the complete solution. Other
changes are required to fully support the euro currency.
Euro currency enablement provided is dependent upon whether or
not the target printer has the Euro currency in resident symbol
set and fonts.
Euro Currency symbol resident in printer
======================================
There are several ways in which the printer can have the Euro
currency symbol resident. Most new printers will ship with the
Euro currency symbol resident. Printer microcode updates are
available from the manufacturers of many popular printers.
Some printers have nonvolatile memory into which a Euro-enabled
font can be downloaded and remain resident. Contact your
printer hardware vendor for information on the available upgrade
options.
For printers with the Euro currency symbol resident, the
Workstation Customization Object (WSCST) enablement consists
of:
1) an "ASCII Code Page Information" (ASCCPINFO) tag with a
"Set Code Page" (CODEPAGE) tag containing the select
string for the symbol set.
2) By default, HPT will convert EBCDIC code pages 1140-49 to
ASCII code page 858 (PC-858). If the printer does not
support this code page, the WSCST must also use the
"EBCDIC-to-ASCII Mapping Table" (EBCASCTBL) tag to instuct
HPT to convert the EBCDIC data to another ASCII symbol set.
3) OS/400 HPT provides default mapping tables from 1140-49 to
PC-858 and Windows 3.1 Latin 1 (code page 1252). If a
different symbol set is required, the "EBCDIC-to-ASCII
Mapping Table" in the WSCST must also define the 192-byte
code point mapping information.
Refer to the "AS/400 Workstation Customization Programming"
reference (SC41-3605) for more detailed information on modifying
WSCST objects.
This PTF provides WSCST objects enabled to support resident
Euro Currency symbol printing for many popular printers.
Refer to the list below to select the appropriate WSCST.

Euro Currency symbol not resident in printer
==========================================
For many printers, HPT can download the Euro currency
symbol for printing. This support is limited to two
classes of printers:
1) Printer supporting PCL 5e datastreams
2) 9-pin dot matrix printers supporting the PPDS datastream
HPT uses different techniques to achieve the font download to
these two technologies.
PCL Printers
------------
Most laser printers in use today support a variant of Hewlett
Hewlett Packard's (HP) PCL datastream.
For PCL printers which do not have the Euro currency symbol
resident the Workstation Customization Object (WSCST) enablement
consists of:
1) A "Euro Symbol Resident" tag with a value of "NO"
(:EUROSYMBOL RESIDENT=NO.).
This PTF provides WSCST objects enabled to support Euro Currency
symbol download printing for many popular laser printers.
Refer to the list below to select the appropriate WSCST.

PPDS 9-pin Dot Matrix Printers
------------------------------
Many dot m printers in use today support a variant of Lexmark's
Proprinter datastream (PPDS).
For PPDS printers which do not have the Euro currency symbol
resident the Workstation Customization Object (WSCST) enablement
consists of:
1) A "Euro Symbol Resident" tag with a value of "NO"
(:EUROSYMBOL RESIDENT=NO.).
2) A "Printer Resolution" tag with a value of "240"
(:PRTRSLTN RESOLUTION=240.).
This PTF provides WSCST objects enabled to support Euro Currency
symbol download printing for several popular PPDS printers.
Refer to the list below to select the appropriate WSCST.

Utilizing new WSCST objects
==========================
The printer device or remote output queue description must be
changed to use the appropriate WSCST. (Refer to the "AS/400 CL
Reference" for information on the use of the CHGDEVD and
CHGOUTQ commands.
If the above list contains a valid Manufacturer Type and Model
(MFRTYPMDL) value for your printer, the WSCST object can be
specified in the MFRTYPMDL field of the description. Otherwise,
the WSCST object must be directly specified in the WSCST field.

I forget to mention we are on V4R5, so the PTF's were no issue.
We also had our QCCSID changed to 1148, so in our case, everything was set
correct.
The problem we've encountered was very subtle though, the *WSCST *HP4 does
the job, but *HP4000 does not. This must be some oversight by IBM, i guess.
We found this out, because you only speak of the *HP4 customisation object.
So without you're posting, it would have taken us longer, to sort out the
problem.
So thank you Rodney,
