Problem:

You get the following error message:

16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program that you are trying to start or install
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS
and Microsoft Windows Applications Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Solution:

This problem is related to running DOS-based or 16-bit applications in Windows XP. Microsoft has provided a solution for this problem here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

To solve this issue:

  1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive.

  2. Click Start > Run.

  3. Run the following command, where X:\ is your CD ROM drive letter:

    expand X:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

If you do not have the Windows XP CD, try downloading it from the Microsoft site and extracting the ZIP file to your windows\system32 directory. If this file does not work, check the Microsoft feedback thread for assistance on your specific version of Windows.
