Problem

Customer started getting 00011 error when sending emails with Email Report Server/400 and a Domino 5.0.8 SMTP server. Their Domino server runs on Windows NT.

They had received a virus last week, so we're speculating this could be virus related since everything has worked fine until just today.

We checked various settings on the Email Report Server/400:
  • Changed ERSBUFFER from 512 to 4096 and then to 20480. We did a test with MAILSPLF after each change. This did not fix problem.
  • Turned on ERSDEBUG and ERSDBGPRT by changing settings to *YES. When the SMTP log spool file was created, it appears that the Domino Server was ending the data connection while we were sending email messages because the disconnect would happen after sending about 1000-2000 bytes of data.
  • Sent a test message by bouncing an email message from Email Report Server/400 on our AS/400 to their SMTP server Internet connection and got the same error.
  • Tried sending a test message by bouncing an email message from Outlook Express on our network to their SMTP server Internet connection and got the same error.
By performing these tests we have determined that the problem lies with the SMTP mail server on the customers Domino Server. We asked them to reboot the Domino server to see if doing so would resolve the problem.

Solution

After rebooting the NT server, the customer got an error on the NT file NTVDM.EXE.  They replaced the NTVDM.EXE file, rebooted again, and the issue is resloved.

This problem must have been related to the virus they received causing a corruption on their NT server.
