Problem Statement:

Upon opening Report Writer (Start | All Programs | ShowCase | Report Writer) on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, receives the following error:
Error: An unhandled win32 exception occurred in vistapro.exe[3992]. This error also occurs when opening BDECFG32.exe from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\Bde. Another symptom that may be seen is when launching Report Writer the screen comes up and then just disappears.

Solution:

Add Query, Report Writer and BDECFG32.exe to the exception list in Data Execution Prevention.

Steps for Windows XP and Windows 7 – 32 bit

  1. Right click on My Computer
  2. Click on Properties
  3. Click on the Advanced tab
  4. Click on the Settings button in the Performance section
  5. Click on the Data Execution Prevention tab
  6. Click on 'Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select'.
  7. Click on Add
  8. Browse to the ShowCase application you wish to add(s).
    Example BDECFG32: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\Bde
    Example Query: C:\Program Files\ShowCase\9\bin\vista.exe
    Example Report Writer: C:\Program Files\ShowCase\9\bin\vistapro.exe
    1. Click Open
    2. Click Apply
    3. Click OK (twice)
  9. Re-boot your PC.

Steps for Windows 7 - 64 bit:

  4. Click on the Settings button in the Performance section

  7. Click on Add

    Example BDECFG32: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Borland Shared\Bde
    Example Query: C:\Program Files (x86)\ShowCase\9\bin\vista.exe
    Example Report Writer: C:\Program Files (x86)\ShowCase\9\bin\vistapro.exe
    1. Click Open
    2. Click Apply
    3. Click OK (twice)
  9. Re-boot your PC.
