Q. I am trying to use the NT Services probe against a Windows 2003 server. When I attempt to specify the services to monitor with the probe, an error is displayed: "The RPC server is unavailable. Make sure that it is a Windows machine with File & Print Sharing turned on, and that any firewall has exceptions for File & Print Sharing." I have disabled the Windows firewall, and have ensured that File & Print sharing is installed. The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is running.

A. One possible reason for the error is that the server has two NIC cards, and File & Print Sharing has been disabled on one of the cards.

Another possible reason is that Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) is installed on the server. The "Network Threat Protection" component of SEP needs to be configured to allow File & Print Sharing on the server.
