Q. Can I change the password for the 'intermapper' user account that the InterMapper installer creates on Linux?
A. We create the 'intermapper' user as a system user; system users are specially marked in the passwords file so that they cannot be used to log in. They do not have a password by default; instead, the password field is filled with an invalid value.
It will not break anything in InterMapper if you do set a password, but it will be less secure than if it was left as a system user, depending on how good you are at generating properly secure passwords, and might actually be much less secure if the password is poorly chosen or is known by several people.
